Amana Colonies Creek Creep
June 20, 2019 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
$25
Cool Woodland and Water Experience
The Amana Colonies area is rich in relatively undisturbed wild areas and wildlife viewing, historical and cultural sites. Meet a the Amana Colonies Convention and Visitors Bureau parking lot to drive to the Amana Trail. The Amana Trail is a beautiful woodland trail that leads to the Iowa River. The hilly trail passes by several creeks that lead to the river. We will hike down into the valley and walk along and into the creek. Visitors will join me for a simple adventure down this hidden wild area and may find signs of wildlife, wild edibles and several geologic features. I am an experienced naturalist with 30 years working with the public as an interpreter and guide. My area of expertise is with families and children but can easily accommodate adult groups as well.
Old Growth Forest
Most of this timber has not been drastically disturbed, therefore, the plant life and wildlife that live here is diverse and unique. There is always something to wonder at, anytime of the year, while walking through these woods.
Geology Uncovered
The creeks that run through the forest have changed dramatically during the last 20 years. We will look for evidence of past geologic events and even historical artifacts.
Playing in the Water
We are drawn to the water and yes, we can get in, in fact, we will get in! The creek is very shallow, winding between rocky bottoms and under trees. It is an adventure to walk down the creek and it can be a muddy adventure but not so muddy that you can’t get back in your car. We suggest bring an old pair of tennis shoes, wear old clothes and put your cell phone in a plastic bag. Bring a change of clothes and shoes in a plastic bag to leave in your car. Rain boots or mud boots work just fine. This is an outdoor adventure so dress appropriately for the weather. Thunderstorms including lightning will force us to cancel or postpone the event.
